The literature on bogue is dominated by contemporary publications on the biology and ecology of the species. A simple search on Google Scholar or |Research Gate yields a few dozen such publications.

Basic information about Boops boops, the bogue, is gathered and summarized in the valuable database Fish Base. http://fishbase.se/summary/Boops-boops.html

Studies related to the history and cultural significance of this fish are particularly rare. The following have been used for this post in the Archives of the Sea:

Wentworth D’Arcy Thompson, in his 1947 book A Glossary of Greek Fishes (London: Oxford University Press) lists all references to bogue in ancient Greek and Latin texts and gives a number of names for bogue in various countries around the Mediterranean.

 N. Marcellos in his 1948 volume Fishing and Fishes, published by Tilperoglou in Greek, describes in detail the fishing of bogue and the challenges it poses to the fisherman. The same subject is covered in a less technical way in Themos Potamianos’ delightful book of 1952 With the Fishing Glass, published by Saliveros, also in Greek.
